ERP test management: SIT, UAT and regression

ERP testing fails when nobody can answer one question: which business requirements are proven to work? Good test management links every requirement to a test case, every test to its results and every failure to a defect.

The testing phases

  • Unit and string testing by the build team
  • System integration testing (SIT) across interfaces
  • User acceptance testing (UAT) by the business
  • Regression testing on every transport set
  • Performance, security and role testing

Requirements traceability (RTM)

A requirements traceability matrix maps each requirement to its test cases and current status. It exposes coverage gaps before UAT, not during it.

Defect triage

Triage daily with severity, priority and an owner. Track ageing and reopen rates; a rising reopen rate is an early warning that fixes are rushed.

Test data

Plan test data like a workstream: who requests it, who provisions it, how it is masked and when it is refreshed. Blocked tests are usually blocked on data.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good UAT pass rate for go-live?

Most programmes require 95% or more of critical-path test cases passed, with no open critical defects.

Do we need a separate test management tool?

Spreadsheets work for small pilots. Programmes with hundreds of tests and multiple teams need live status, traceability and defect linkage in one place.
